Using pleating techniques from fashion design, I recreated three silhouettes of women’s silk garments. I wanted to suggest costumes for the Three Graces, three lightly dressed women often represented in visual arts, a nod to art history particularly known for representing « naked women by dressing them ».
I chose silk for its translucence and amazing draping properties that explore tridimensionality by using gathers, pleats and smocks.
Eventually, in addition to « stripping women naked by dressing them », the use of silk and other animal fibers in the clothing industry illustrates another paradox of human nature: stripping animals naked to dress humans.
Three Graces Habotai silk, sari silk, silk thread and polyester thread, glass and paper base. Height 19 cm
